Created on canvas in mixed
media the images were originally designs for screen print, that made
up a theme in relation to my studies on hormones and testosterone
and the test of time with my partner and father of my family.
This was the creation of a conclusion.
The main emphasis for this painting was love in long term relationships.
The theme aims to identify with the responses to emotions that
one may have an inability to cope with.Irrationality and the outcomes of isolation.
Examples of this could lead to desparate measures.
The title was somewhat taken from a Bob Marley song, with deliberate
usage of 60’s/Warhol style of icon portrayal, not to mention
other graphical influences. I have included my efforts with Symbolism,
using Mike Tyson, a modern day icon for aggression,(well, he was when I painted it). As a person, Tyson represents an encompassing flow
and the intensity of the negative that can be emitted in the overall scenario of
a volatile relationship.Both the passion and the pain.

The painting is also about familiarity with the experience of repeating patterns in
their adult life. Out of the stop clock comes a teapot, pouring the
tea. This idea was inspired by the Mad Hatter and Alice in Wonderland
whereby everything stops for tea; regularity and a task that is constantly
repeated. A cycle of life patterns perhaps, an inability to express
yourself, a nightmare, a prison and with no escape you feel trapped
and alone, like a bomb waiting to explode. This somewhat ambiguous
hypothesis of a life that could relate to anyone is narrowed by
the close attention I have paid to my choice of colour. Originally,
I chose the colour scheme first, designing the images around the
mood that I would aim to emanate from each panel i.e. top right,
relates to combat, top left relates to passion, bottom left to desolation,
and bottom right to bruising (both physical and mental).
Then I took other influences into consideration, such as John Steinbeck’s
novel, ‘The grapes of wrath’, came to mind when thinking
of slavery and oppression. Note that the woman’s arm has been
twisted and that she has no time. Is she about to explode and break
her silence? Or is she looking on the bright side?
The knife in the ribs relates to anxiety, the splitting headache, and a gun shooting the nightmare to convey
a sense of tension. Fuseli’s influence of ‘the nightmare’
was relevant to time and the fact that history repeats itself, as
does time itself.
Previously exhibited on three occasions as 2 separate paintings
to create distance between the two, may have isolated the scenario,
but, by bringing them together as one painting created a claustrophobic
element, more relevant to the whole.
